#MeMeditating – Lucy

Welcome to Lucy’s #MeMeditating story —  part of our #MeMeditating series, where students share their real-life stories of how Vedic Meditation has affected their lives.

Broadcaster, writer and psychotherapist Lucy has been meditating for four years. Lucy learned to meditate at a time in her life when she was feeling stuck in her career and looking to shift things up a gear. Now, she can’t imagine her life without it. “For a ‘Perfection Princess’ like me, this opportunity to let go, with no agenda, is so liberating.”

I’m Lucy.

Why did you learn to meditate?

I was feeling stuck in my career and a dear friend suggested I go to one of London Meditation Centre’s free Intro to Meditation Talks. I remember thinking, nah – this won’t be for me. How wrong I was!

What benefits have you experienced from learning to meditate?

Letting go of my expectations about meditation was a gift. For a ‘Perfection Princess’ like me, this opportunity to let go, with no agenda, is so liberating. I can honestly say, the time I give myself to meditate is my biggest luxury in life. Not least because since 2016 I’ve noticed a greater capacity to go with the flow, and I love myself and my life more and more each day. Plus I’ve weirdly cracked my phobia of needles.

How have you adapted to fitting meditation into your life on a daily basis?

It’s a brilliant way to bookend my days. I have missed probably less than a dozen meditations in nearly 4 years, and I’m sure this is because I love the beautiful, easy rhythm they give to my life. I am extremely fortunate that my daily life schedule is pretty much down to me, and on the days it isn’t, I love being creative about where to squeeze in the next meditation.

How’s meditation helping you at the moment?

Meditation is my rock. Now more than ever, having the sacred structure of a twice-a-day practice, calms me, and helps me surrender to what’s possible. I’ve been working a lot across broadcast media giving advice on ‘how to stay sane while staying home’, and am hosting weekly #MindOverMatterMondays over on Insta Live (follow @thelucyberesford1 to join in) for advice on mental health or relationships. For all the turbulence, I’m seeing an incredible eagerness in people to use this situation as a time to reflect and reboot.
