Vedic Meditation for Slower Ageing
Age is most often measured by the number of birthdays we’ve had. But how we age is not just about how many times you’ve been around the sun. It’s also about your lifestyle, stress levels, and overall well-being. This is why some people in their 70s and 80s radiate vitality, while others in their 40s or 50s feel exhausted and depleted.
Scientific research shows that biological age—how the body actually functions—can be very different from chronological age. Factors such as stress, poor sleep, diet, and emotional strain accelerate ageing at a cellular level, leading to fatigue, illness, and a decline in mental sharpness.
How Stress Accelerates Ageing
One of the biggest contributors to premature ageing is stress. Chronic stress wears down the body, leading to:
- Increased inflammation, a key driver of age-related diseases.
- Elevated cortisol levels, which weaken the immune system and break down collagen.
- Higher risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and cognitive decline.
Studies using the Adult Growth Examination (AGE) test have shown that meditators who practise an automatic self-transcending technique have a significantly lower biological age. Long-term meditators (those practising for over five years) were found to be an average of 12 years younger biologically than their actual age. Even those who had been meditating for less than five years showed biological markers five years younger than their chronological age.
How Vedic Meditation Slows the Ageing Process
Vedic Meditation counteracts the effects of stress by providing deep rest to the nervous system. As the mind settles, the body experiences a profound state of relaxation, allowing for repair and renewal at a cellular level.
Research shows that meditation:
- Reduces oxidative stress, a key factor in ageing.
- Lowers blood pressure, improving cardiovascular health.
- Balances hormones, including cortisol and DHEA-S, a hormone linked to longevity.
- Increases telomerase activity, helping to maintain the integrity of DNA and slow cellular ageing.
Aging with Vitality and Wisdom
Beyond the physical benefits, Vedic Meditation transforms the experience of ageing itself. With regular practice, meditators report:
- Greater mental clarity and resilience.
- A more positive outlook on life.
- A deeper connection to inner wisdom and confidence in decision-making.
Rather than resisting ageing or fearing change, meditators report a growing sense of ease, purpose, and vitality. The body remains strong, the mind stays sharp, and life becomes more fulfilling—at every stage.
